Prescription-Only Medicines (POM-V) Notice

Some products that you may wish to purchase, particularly medications, are classified under UK law as POM-V (Prescription Only Medicines – Veterinary). These are medications that can only be dispensed with a valid veterinary prescription.

What You Need to Know:

  • Legal Requirement: By law, POM-V medications require a prescription from a licensed veterinarian. This ensures that the medicine is appropriate for your pet’s specific condition and is administered safely.
  • How to Obtain a Prescription: To purchase any POM-V medication, you must first obtain a written prescription from your veterinarian. This prescription must include specific details about your pet, the medication, and the dosage prescribed.
  • Submitting Your Prescription:

Step 1: Obtain a prescription from your vet.

Step 2: Submit the prescription to us. This can usually be done by uploading a scanned copy or mailing the original prescription.

Step 3: Once we receive your prescription, our team will carefully review it to ensure it meets all legal and medical guidelines.

Frequently Asked Questions

Clear instructions are provided on how much of the medication should be administered, how frequently it should be given, and for how long the treatment should continue. This ensures that the animal receives the correct amount of medication at the right intervals, which is essential for the treatment's effectiveness and for avoiding potential side effects.
Veterinary prescriptions typically have a validity of up to six months, though some may be shorter, so it's important to verify the expiration date. Prescriptions for Controlled Drugs are valid for only 28 days. To ensure timely medication dispensing, set reminders to renew and upload valid prescriptions before they expire.
Pet Food Order Ltd can only supply products with prescriptions signed by a veterinary surgeon who is registered with the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons (RCVS) as a UK practising vet.
Prescription-only veterinary medicines (POM-V) are delivered exclusively to UK addresses.
Your vet should not refuse a reasonable request for a written prescription just because it will be dispensed elsewhere. While vets may charge for written prescriptions, these charges should not be unreasonable or deter clients. Even with the prescription charge, medications from us are often significantly cheaper than those obtained directly from your vet, especially for repeat prescriptions.
Submitting your prescription to multiple online pharmacies to obtain more medication than allowed by your vet is illegal. It's also an offense to submit or alter a fraudulent prescription without authorization. The company conducts routine checks with veterinary practices to detect fraud and, by ordering from them, you consent to this process. If any misuse is detected, they must report it to the Veterinary Medicines Directorate (VMD), which will investigate and determine any legal action.
